Xtep Begins Training for Runners ahead of VPBank Hanoi Marathon 2019

A Chinese coach arranged by sportswear sponsor Xtep has begun providing some training on long-distance running to Vietnamese runners while another professional training camp is scheduled later this month before Vietnam's capital hosts a major international marathon in late October, organizers and one of the race's sponsors said.

Chinese coach Tang Tao from Beijing Sport University opened a short training camp on Aug 31 with Vietnamese runners with focus on how to raise running performance and improve results, said the Race Organizing Committee (ROC) of the VPBank Hanoi Marathon - Heritage Race 2019 (VHM).

"The camp’s goals are to get you to the starting line healthy, physically and mentally prepared," Tang said.

While running has been popular in the Southeast Asian country, experts said many still lack skills and proper training as well as the experience in joining major races. In recent years, several international marathons have been organised in various cities across Vietnam, having drawn the participation of foreign runners and also helped stimulate the training spirit for the sport among Vietnamese people.

The training session was joined by Vietnamese pacers, who will run along with athletes in VHM, scheduled to take place in Hanoi on Oct 20 and which is expected to draw attention of at least 5,500 runners, more than doubling the number of participants in a similar event held in the city in 2018.

Also before dawn on Aug 31, the pacers and 50 runners conducted a test-run of the race course that is designed to take VHM runners through Hanoi's Old Quarter as well as famous spots in the city, including Hanoi's Flag Pole, the Opera House, the historical Long Bien bridge and Ho Chi Minh mausoleum.

Xtep Vietnam, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-listed sportswear firm Xtep International Holdings Limited, said it would organize another professional training camp later this month to help Vietnamese runners prepare for the race.

Xtep has become the exclusive sportswear sponsor for VHM, Xtep Vietnam said in a statement late last month.

VHM will see runners competing in four categories including the 42-km marathon and the 21-km half-marathon categories on several courses which will link Hanoi's Old Quarter with three key destinations, namely Hoan Kiem Lake, the Long Bien Bridge across the Red River and West Lake, organizers said.
