VPBANK HANOI MARATHON - HERITAGE RACE (VHM) - 2019

Marathon is a long-distance running race, with an official distance of 42,195 kilometres (26.219 miles, or 26 miles 385 yards), usually run as a road race. The event was instituted in commemoration of the fabled run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides (more correctly, Philippides), a messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens, who reported the victory. The marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896, though the distance did not become standardized until 1921. More than 800 marathons are held throughout the world each year, with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes as larger marathons can have tens of thousands of participants such as New York Marathon, London Marathon, Paris Marathon, Copenhagen Marathon…


Founded in 1010 with the name of Thang Long, Hanoi city has a long history. Today the capital of Vietnam is home to key events in political, economic, social, cultural and arts areas as well as a major destination for tourists. The one-thousand-year history has left the city with hundreds of cultural, architectural, religious and artistic heritages, which have brought pride to each of its residents. Tours to discover Hanoi's rich cultural heritage have placed it in the wish list of travelers all over the world.

With that spirit, the VPBANK HANOI MARATHON - HERITAGE RACE (VHM) is a connection of modern day sports activities with the glorious, heroic and heritage past of the capital. The marathon is also a unique way to attract athletes from many countries.

VHM is the first marathon that runs through the Old Quarter, where participating athletes can have a new and interesting experience when it comes to historical and cultural values, the lives of Hanoians as well as the modern presence through each running step. This is the first marathon to connect three main historical attractions of Hanoi, namely Hoan Kiem Lake (the Lake of the Returned Sword), “Hong Ha” (the Red River) and West Lake. Therefore, to express VHM's main idea, the three famous places including Long Bien Bridge that runs across the Red River will be connected through the city's Old Quarter.


Purpose, Meaning of the Race
VHM is aimed at encouraging and developing sport activities in a sustainable and broad way for all ages and classes of Vietnamese people.

The race is also held to help develop the professional, semi-professional and amateur sports activity to improve the health and stature of the Vietnamese people.

Besides, VHM is a key bridge to support the introduction and promotion of the image of Vietnam in general and of Hanoi in particular, as the capital with thousand years of civilization, the City of Peace among international friends.


Description of the Race Course
In order to represent the main idea of ​​running the "VPBANK HANOI MARATHON - HERITAGE RACE (VHM)", three famous landmarks - Ho Guom, Long Bien Bridge and West Lake  - are connected through the Old Quarter, creating a unique route through heritages of Hanoi.
